Norwegian Grammar Workshop
Norwegian Grammar Workshop
Course Description:
Strengthen your language core with our Norwegian Grammar Workshop – a course dedicated to demystifying Norwegian grammar and helping you apply it correctly in speaking and writing. This workshop-style course is ideal for learners who find Norwegian grammar rules confusing or feel that grammar is holding back their fluency. Whether it’s understanding when to use “i” vs “på” in time expressions, getting the hang of noun genders and plurals, or mastering the syntax of subordinate clauses, we’ve got you covered. Each session of the grammar course zeroes in on a specific aspect of grammar, explained clearly in English and Norwegian, with plenty of examples and practice exercises. We’ll also compare Norwegian structures to English (and other languages) to highlight differences that often cause errors. Our goal is to move grammar from an abstract concept in your head to a set of practical skills you can use instinctively. By improving your grasp of grammar, you’ll form sentences more accurately, which boosts your overall confidence in communication. As Alfaskolen notes, focused grammar courses can take your Norwegian to the next stage by enabling you to communicate any message more effectively (Alfaskolen offers experience & expertise in Norwegian language).
- Topics covered may include:
- Sentence structure and word order: Understand the standard Norwegian sentence order (Subject-Verb-Object) and the inversion that happens in questions and after certain adverbs. Practice arranging sentences, especially in cases like questions (Hvorfor kommer du ikke?) or sentences starting with time/place (I går dro jeg til butikken). This will help you sound more natural and avoid the classic expat mistake of using English word order.
- Noun forms and adjective agreement: Drill the rules for noun gender (en/ei/et) and plural forms, including irregulars. Learn how adjectives change to match gender and number (e.g., en stor bil, ei stor bok, et stort hus, flere store hus). If you’ve been unsure about when to add -t or -e to adjectives, this will become clear.
- Verb tenses and conjugation: Review all the common tenses – present, past (preteritum), present perfect, future – and learn the less-used ones (past perfect, conditional forms) for completeness. We will also practice modal verbs (skal, vil, kan, må, bør) and how they affect sentence meaning. If needed, we’ll touch on passive voice formation (blir gjort, ble sagt). By systematically practicing conjugations and compound tenses, you’ll eliminate errors like mixing up har gjort vs gjorde.
- Prepositions and expressions: Tackle the pesky prepositions that can change meaning in Norwegian. We’ll list common verbs with fixed prepositions (like å være glad i, å høre på) and go through time expressions (e.g., om morgenen, på mandag, i fjor). You’ll do fill-in-the-blank exercises to cement these usages. This is essential for speaking and writing more precisely.
- Subordinate clauses and conjunctions: Learn how to build longer, complex sentences. We’ll practice using conjunctions like fordi, hvis, at, som (because, if, that, who/which) and ensure you know the rule that the verb goes at the end in subordinate clauses (a hallmark of Norwegian grammar that trips up many). For example, convert two simple sentences “Jeg liker Oslo. Det er mange parker.” into one complex sentence “Jeg liker Oslo fordi det er mange parker her.” You’ll get comfortable joining thoughts without error.
- Common grammar pitfalls: We address frequent learner mistakes at various levels. For instance, mixing up sin vs hans, using det er vs den er properly, or confusion with noe vs noen. By clarifying these, your sentences will become much more accurate. We also invite students to bring in examples of sentences they’ve tried to form but weren’t sure about – we dissect and fix them together.
This Grammar Workshop is hands-on: expect a mix of mini-lectures, quick practice quizzes, and interactive exercises. We keep it engaging with real-life sentence examples and maybe even a bit of gamification (team challenges on grammar questions, etc.). You’ll also receive cheat-sheets and reference tables to take home for review. After completing the course, you’ll likely find that you
think in Norwegian grammar – making fewer mistakes and correcting yourself automatically. It’s a perfect support course alongside regular language classes or self-study, ensuring that your grammatical foundation is solid. Remember, a better grasp of grammar leads to clearer communication (
