Business Norwegian Course (Norwegian for the Workplace)
Business Norwegian Course (Norwegian for the Workplace)
Course Description:
Accelerate your career in Norway with our Business Norwegian Course, a specialized program for professionals who want to excel in a Norwegian-speaking work environment. This course focuses on Norwegian language skills for business and the workplace, equipping you with the vocabulary and communication strategies needed in offices, meetings, and industry-specific contexts. Ideal for intermediate and above students (B1+), Business Norwegian covers everything from writing a professional email or CV in Norwegian to delivering presentations and participating in meetings. You will learn formal language versus casual workplace slang, understand Norwegian workplace culture and etiquette, and even pick up sector-specific terms (tailored to the participants, whether you’re in tech, finance, healthcare, etc.). By the end of the course, you’ll feel confident networking with Norwegian colleagues, handling clients in Norwegian, and presenting yourself professionally in the Norwegian job market.
- Key components of the course:
- Professional communication: Learn to write effective business emails and documents in Norwegian. We cover common phrases for greetings, polite requests, and closing (e.g., “Vedlagt finner du…”, “Takk for rask tilbakemelding,” etc.). You’ll practice writing a resume and cover letter in Norwegian, as well as shorter texts like meeting summaries or reports, with feedback to ensure correct formal tone and clarity.
- Meetings and presentations: Practice language used in meetings – from small talk before the meeting starts, to giving your opinion, agreeing or disagreeing diplomatically, and closing the meeting. We’ll do role-play meetings where you can use phrases like “Hva er status på prosjektet?” or “Har du noe å tilføye?”. For presentations, you’ll learn how to structure a talk in Norwegian (opening, presenting agenda, explaining data on slides, concluding, and Q&A phrases). Each participant will have a chance to give a short presentation and get tips on language and delivery.
- Telephone and customer service: Speaking on the phone in a second language can be challenging. We simulate phone calls – answering professionally, introducing yourself and your company, taking messages, and politely handling misunderstandings or difficult callers in Norwegian. If your job involves customer service, we’ll also cover typical dialogues and etiquette for that (for instance, how to address customers vs colleagues, using “De” formal form if needed, etc.).
- Industry terminology: Based on the students in the group, we dedicate time to relevant jargon. For example, if many participants are in IT, we’ll go over IT terms in Norwegian; if in healthcare, important medical Norwegian terms; if in business admin, financial or legal terms (like faktura, budsjettering, kontrakt). This ensures the course content is directly applicable to your field. We might split into sub-groups at times if needs differ.
- Norwegian business culture: Alongside language, we integrate cultural tips so you understand how Norwegian workplaces function. Topics include: the flat hierarchy (you may call the boss by first name), typical workplace small talk topics (the weather, weekend plans, skiing!), the importance of punctuality, and understanding indirect communication styles. We’ll discuss dos and don’ts – like how Norwegians value work-life balance and expect people to leave by 4-5pm, or how consensus is often sought in meetings. This cultural insight will help you use your language skills appropriately and fit in smoothly at work.
- Networking vocabulary: Learn phrases for networking events or informal chats with colleagues. For example, talking about your profession, asking about someone else’s role, or describing your company’s services in Norwegian. This is especially useful if you attend professional gatherings or need to market your skills.
