Norwegian B1 Level Courses for Intermediate learners

In this Norwegian course you will be following the book "Stein på Stein". In the B1 full level, you will cover the whole book from chapters 1 to 15. Our Norwegian language courses include access to the digital version of the book and 24/7 access to Stein på Stein e-learning platform.

Norwegian Course B1 – Intermediate Level (Norskkurs B1 Mellomnivå)

Reach the intermediate level (B1) and start speaking Norwegian with confidence and independence. Our B1 Norwegian Intermediate Course is tailored for those who have a solid foundation (completed A2) and want to become comfortable living, working, or studying in Norwegian.

At B1, you transition from basic exchanges to more substantive communication: you will learn to express opinions, share experiences, and handle unexpected situations in Norwegian. The course curriculum includes engaging discussions on Norwegian culture, society, and day-to-day topics (like work life, health, current events), helping you practice more complex sentences and expand your vocabulary significantly. We cover important grammar such as the past perfect tense, conditional phrases (e.g. “I would like to…”), and word order in main vs. subordinate clauses – critical for speaking and writing correctly. You’ll also work on reading comprehension using authentic texts (like simplified news articles or short stories) and practice writing coherent texts (for example, a letter of complaint or a story about a childhood memory).

By course end, you should be able to handle most situations that arise in a Norwegian-speaking environment – from chatting with colleagues to resolving issues at the bank – and connect sentences fluidly in speech.

Completing B1 means you can get by in Norwegian independently – a key milestone. In fact, B1 is the level often required for permanent residency (via Norskprøve B1). This course prepares you for the Norskprøve at B1 and even introduces some B2 elements to ease your path to the next level. With Inlearn’s communicative approach, by the end of B1 you’ll find yourself thinking in Norwegian more often and handling everyday and workplace conversations much more comfortably.

About your Norwegian course with Inlearn

This will depend on your goals and your commitment while learning Norwegian. Students will receive homework every lesson and are expected to study and consolidate between lessons to maximize results.

The B1 level is comprised of 4 modules and has a total duration of 64 lesson hours. Those lesson hours are distributed in 32 meetings of 1h30, with a total duration of 16 weeks.

You will learn how to:

    • Speak about personal and familiar topics in detail: discuss your job, education, personal goals, hobbies, and experiences with greater fluency. You’ll practice giving descriptions and narrating events (e.g. describing what your home country is like, or telling a story) in Norwegian.
    • Express opinions and preferences: learn phrases to state your viewpoint and argue lightly for or against something (useful for friendly debates on everyday topics). For example, talk about Norwegian food you like vs. dislike, or give your opinion on Norwegian traditions.
    • Handle practical situations: role-play scenarios such as job interviews, doctor’s appointments, travel arrangements, or telephone conversations – building confidence to manage these real-life interactions in Norwegian.
    • Use intermediate grammar accurately: master word order (inverting subject-verb in questions and subordinate clauses), use of modal verbs (should, must, can in Norwegian), comparatives/superlatives (e.g. bedre, best), and dependent clauses (like “because”, “that”, “if” statements) which allow you to connect ideas smoothly.
    • Improve listening skills to understand the main points when hearing native speakers discuss familiar matters at normal speed – e.g. following the gist of a radio news segment about an everyday issue.
    • Write connected text: compose a well-structured paragraph or short essay about topics of personal interest (for instance, explain why you chose to move to Norway, or write about your last holiday) using correct linking words and past tenses.
